Visit by Kigali International Arbitration Centre (KIAC)
KLRCA has always been a keen believer of ‘the sharing of best practices’ when it comes to welcoming local and international organisations. Such visits allow the centre to pick up valuable insights that will go a long way towards the betterment of existing operating models. Similarly it provides the centre the opportunity to assist the visiting party with the exchanges of ideas and materials (if need be) in return.
KLRCA had the privilege of hosting its newly established African counterpart, the Kigali International Arbitration Centre (KIAC) for a two-day official visit here at Bangunan Sulaiman. Professor Datuk Sundra Rajoo, KLRCA’s Director was on hand to welcome the three delegates; Bernadette Uwicyeza, KIAC’s Secretary-General; Thierry Ngoga Gakuba, KIAC’s Registrar and Isabelle Karihangabo, Permanent Secretary and Solicitor General in the Ministry of Justice Rwanda.
KIAC being a fairly new centre that was only officially launched in mid 2012, has already made waves in the alternative dispute resolution (ADR) scene through the centre’s achievement of registering close to 20 cases both domestic and international despite still being in its infancy. This is a remarkable feat considering that most newly established centres across the globe usually take three to four years to file disputes.
This learning and knowledge-sharing visit saw the delegates from KIAC meet the various departments within KLRCA’s operating mechanism over the two days to discuss best practices of running a regional ADR centre.
